14:40 | Keynote: Rethinking Assessment in Higher Education: Shifting the Assessment Paradigm to Promote and Support C21st Learning Professor Kay SAMBELL (Guest of EdUHK) Professor of Higher Education Pedagogy, Edinburgh Napier University, United Kingdom This keynote presentation argues that while the rapid switch associated with the pandemic has undoubtedly exposed some of the practical frailties of our campus-based assessment practices, it now also offers a golden opportunity to press the reset button on some of them, enabling us to redesign assessment to promote C21st learning. It suggests that to enable this and scale up at pace we must build on the foundation of sound evidence-based educational principles that have emerged from the Assessment For Learning (AfL) movement. These will be distilled in the presentation and accompanied by concrete illustrative examples of the impact of AfL on students’ approaches to learning. A range of pragmatic guidance notes and further practical resources to support colleagues embarking on the Rethinking Assessment in Higher Education project will be also made available.

15:20 | Keynote: Thinking Differently about Assessment with Digital Technology Support Dr Mathew HILLIER (Guest of HKBU) e-Assessment Academic, Macquarie University, Australia There is an increasing need to instil and accredit graduates with skills and knowledge fit for the employability and social needs of the 21st century. Yet the need to assess higher order knowledge, complex problem solving and the integration of now common software 'e-tools of the trade' is increasingly a challenge in light of the persistence of relatively archaic practices in education such as pen-on-paper quiz testing. In light of the COVID-19 induced rapid pivot to online teaching, there is now an opportunity to take the next step in re-thinking assessment in higher education. Digital technology can enable assessment designers to create more authentic and relevant assessments to better meet the needs of 21st century learners. However the realities of resource constraints and differing perspectives means there are often trade-offs made between the competing priorities of authenticity, scalability and integrity of assessments. This session will explore issues, concepts and practical examples of innovative assessment practices that seek to strike an achievable balance in enabling a rethinking of assessment in higher education. |
